Luckily, most things I crave can be found in the supermarkets of Nampula City, but if you’re looking at blog post because you want to send a surprise care package to someone in PC Mozambique, here are things I find myself asking for.
- Sheet masks
- Sesame oil
- Taco seasoning
- Hazelnut dark chocolate
- New fun appropriate clothes
- Crystal Lite
- Dryer sheets (they make things smell like home)
- Non perishable salmon/tuna packets
- Beef jerky
- Things to pass the time: colored pencils, adult coloring books, crosswords, friendship bracelet string.
Yup, starting to realize this is mostly a food list…. oops 🍫🌮🌭🥐🧀🍕

And more importantly, when sending packages, remember that it’s very possible that things get stolen, some volunteers swear that packages and letters won’t get stolen if there are religious signs on it, like crosses or pictures of the Virgin Mary. Others say to write “Irmã Eléonore van Tulder” (or qualquer name) for a girl, or “Padre So-and-So” for a boy so the post office thinks we’re a nun/priest and would feel bad stealing. Customs are also a butthead when receiving packages so make sure to claim that the package is worth less than $10 USD.
